(More customer reviews)Unlike a lot of reviewers who post reviews on a product they've never seen or held (Apple Stores were told they wouldn't get theirs until the end of October--per Charlotte NC store) ----- I actually have one.

I ordered mine on Oct 12, and it arrived Oct 20.I of course ordered the 60GB device.

It was easy to swap out my old 40 GB device with this new one.I'd previously installed the new iTunes and the iPod software version 10-12-05 that I'd downloaded.It was plug in, register, and download. (And I had to swap cables on my dock***.)

Some observations:

The screen is very bright when you turn the backlight on and leave it on, it's very dim if you don't (probably how they get the stated 20 hour battery life).

***No more Firewire connections.I was sad to see that, as the Firewire connection saved me from getting a new USB hub.

The Holy Grail is video here...however, converting it to iPod standards isn't easy.I have a lot of DiVX video, to which the QuickTime Converter isn't up to recognizing, much less converting.Forget about 3rd party converters that you already own, it seems the iPod only wants Apple-converted video.But rest assured, there are software developers frantically scrambling to solve this.I have a couple of beta converters I found, but with very mixed results.I'd give it a couple of weeks then good software will be available for converting video to the iPod.

The sound is as good as ever, no worries there.

It has the same width and height as my 40GB iPod, so your cases should fit nicely, and maybe a similar thickness to the old 10/20 GB iPods.It fits in my auto transmitter/charger, but I have to slightly angle it back as I'm inserting it to hit the dock squarely.

All in all, the video situation was disappointing, but with lots of money at stake, it will get worked out by all these 3rd party developers.I did manage to get a couple very short preexisting QuickTime videos converted successfully to the iPod standard, so I know it DOES play video - the problem is just the conversion process.Not necessarily Apple's fault, except that their video standard is maybe a little too rigid.

(More customer reviews)I bought this as a cheap MP3 player for my daughter's birthday.I figured she'd lose it anyway.She was excited when she opened it, but two hours later, I'd seen enough.Turns on, then off repeatedly when connected to the computer through the USB connection, so computer can never fully sync with the device.Our other MP3 players work fine.
COBY "customer support" is horrendous.First, "Damien" tells me that I must charge the unit for 4 hours.I argue with him that this thing takes a AAA battery, what's to charge!He gets back to me, agrees that it is defective.Then tells me they want a $6 MONEY ORDER to process a return.Returning to Amazon.

$160 for 4 gb and excellent features or $150 for a 1 gb nano?

It's just too cool.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS I HAVE ADDED AFTER OWNING IT FOR A WHILE:

The sound quality of this mp3 player is BETTER THAN MY COMPUTER WITH WINAMP AND THE EQUALIZERS.Definite audiophile player.

I like using the Sony EX71 headphones.Good bass and clean sounding.I use the vocal preset with the bass boost and it sounds infreakingcredible.

IGNORE WHAT THAT OTHER GUY SAID.I got a silicone case for $7.The headphones are good if you actually wear them, but I prefer my noise-isolating headphones.The USB cable is actually 1'6", not 6".Read the instructions and you will be able to charge the battery.

The shuffle feature has got to be unique.It doesnt pick random songs exactly, it picks ones that lead well from one to another.For example, it does a couple of the same genre or artist and then goes to another.Either that or I have strange, strange luck.

(More customer reviews)I bought the 512MB model of this product a few days ago, set it up, plugged it into my computer and it worked for less than one minute.I have sent several e-mails to Oregon Scientfic and their selling agent (ExploraTrac), they have not even bothered to answer them.Contacted them on their 800 number several times and was told I would be contacted, no response.This is not a cheap product (at least in terms of price), however, in terms of quality it is absolute and utter rubbish and the companies customer service is non-existent.I would strongly recommend that no one purchase this product.I would rate it at zero stars if possible, the only thing they did correctly was take my money and ship this piece of junk to me.

(More customer reviews)At first I was delighted to receive this little bargain player. Upon loading some audio books the problems began. The controls didn't seem to give consistent results, sometimes you push them and you go to the root menu and sometime you go back to the file you were listening to. Frustrating you say? Oh don't get me started. It's taken hours of my time as I don't give up on this kind of thing easily yet I'm ready to admit defeat in this case and just use it for what it allows.
Files were easily corrupted and became unable to be removed yet still took up space. There seems to be some "hidden file" feature that may account for all this but I didn't dare try to use it given all of the other glitches and bugs.
The instruction manual was frustrating to say the least showing pictures of screens that never appeared. Surely it was translated from Chinese mistaking words like fold for folder, and that's just the start.
For photo viewing all the photos were supposed to be .jpg although after loading my own the only one I could consistently view was one that came on the player marked .bmp.
Don't get me wrong it's not a TOTAL piece of junk....when it plays a file it does a good job moving between chapters automatically with good enough sound quality. You can even slow or speed up the files without change of pitch .
It seems to record voice just fine but with all the problems I've had with the other features I wouldn't rely on it for long.
The instruction book....if you can really call it that doesn't even tell you how to turn the device on. There is a small switch on the bottom next to the computer/charge port. I had to cram the 3.5mm headset jack into the tiny tight hole but it does seem to work.
The software that comes on the tiny disk included might work on something but seems only to confuse the tiny brain in this little player.
The upgrade of the "firmware" (I did mention the Chinese thing didn't I?)did nothing at all as far as I could tell.
At least you can use this for a 8gig flash storage. Don't rely on it.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this MP3 player wanna be, unfortunately before I read the other reviews.I got this in the mail and it took me 20 minutes to get the stupid thing to register on my computer (Which is less then 30 days old and has no problems). Once it finally clicked in to my computer, it was a drag and drop system to move the music.However the HUGE let down was went I went to use it and it sounded like it was under water.It was a HUGE waste of money, spend the money and buy something decent.
