(More customer reviews)Unlike a lot of reviewers who post reviews on a product they've never seen or held (Apple Stores were told they wouldn't get theirs until the end of October--per Charlotte NC store) ----- I actually have one.

I ordered mine on Oct 12, and it arrived Oct 20.I of course ordered the 60GB device.

It was easy to swap out my old 40 GB device with this new one.I'd previously installed the new iTunes and the iPod software version 10-12-05 that I'd downloaded.It was plug in, register, and download. (And I had to swap cables on my dock***.)

Some observations:

The screen is very bright when you turn the backlight on and leave it on, it's very dim if you don't (probably how they get the stated 20 hour battery life).

***No more Firewire connections.I was sad to see that, as the Firewire connection saved me from getting a new USB hub.

The Holy Grail is video here...however, converting it to iPod standards isn't easy.I have a lot of DiVX video, to which the QuickTime Converter isn't up to recognizing, much less converting.Forget about 3rd party converters that you already own, it seems the iPod only wants Apple-converted video.But rest assured, there are software developers frantically scrambling to solve this.I have a couple of beta converters I found, but with very mixed results.I'd give it a couple of weeks then good software will be available for converting video to the iPod.

The sound is as good as ever, no worries there.

It has the same width and height as my 40GB iPod, so your cases should fit nicely, and maybe a similar thickness to the old 10/20 GB iPods.It fits in my auto transmitter/charger, but I have to slightly angle it back as I'm inserting it to hit the dock squarely.

All in all, the video situation was disappointing, but with lots of money at stake, it will get worked out by all these 3rd party developers.I did manage to get a couple very short preexisting QuickTime videos converted successfully to the iPod standard, so I know it DOES play video - the problem is just the conversion process.Not necessarily Apple's fault, except that their video standard is maybe a little too rigid.

(More customer reviews)The screen is very nice and the push screen is kind of neat but it sometimes can accidentally go the wrong direction. It takes forever to charge and you have to use the usb cable to charge unless you buy the option a/c cable. I think it is compatible with Windows Media 10 and now Media 11 is already out. Navigating through the screens is tiresome and is very tricky to memorize the features. Oh yeh and the headphones are pitiful. I think it's got the right idea but there are more user friendly MP3's out there. PS- the optional cradle is worthless but cool looking.

Optional Cradle
With the U10's optional cradle, even more possibilities open up as the U10 combines with the FM tuner to provide a full-fledged multimedia alarm clock. It even includes a traditional snooze button for five minutes of extra sleep. When the U10 is sitting in its cradle, the line-in can hook up to other audio sources. Music from the stereo system, for example, can be MP3-encoded in real time and stored on the player. The cradle also includes a remote control.

(More customer reviews)SCOPE: Because of the price drop on the color models, this review will be targeted to those struggling over a 20gig b&w screen vs. the 30gig color iPod decision.

BACKGROUND: I own both the 40gig iPod Photo and the new 30gig iPod Photo, and have owned a 15gig regular 4G iPod in the past and I also own a 512mb Shuffle. I use both PC and Mac formats.Note, I am not recommending the 60gig variety.

1) BOTTOM LINE: The new 30gig iPod Photo @ $349 is, in my opinion, the *perfect* iPod.My main complaint with the 40gig iPod photo was its price and size/weight (i gave it 4 stars).The new 30gig is roughly the same size/weight as the b&w 20gig and has all the features of the Photo family --> and for just $50 more, you get another 10 gigs, 3 more hours of battery time and a color screen!!!This price/feature tradeoff is one of the best you'll find anywhere in the Apple product suite.Frankly, the 20gig b&w is currently mis-priced @ $299, i would expect this price to drop very soon.

NOTE:
30gig iPod Photo = $11.63 /per gig -- $23.26 /per hour battery time
20gig iPod b&w = $14.95 /per gig -- $24.91 /per hour battery time

2) PHOTO QUALITY: Good to "pretty good".. but not excellent (no improvement since the first iPod Photos were released in 10/04)... I do realize the size of the screen is only 2 inches, but photos tend to be slightly pixilated, even the full resolution ones that are over 2mb (though you stop noticing after a minute) and color reproduction is not all that great on skin tones and deep reds, but very good w/ greens&blues... which make pics of landscapes quite nice!

3) PHOTOS ON MY TV: Now this is where this thing shines... this is a really cool feature... however you MUST BUY the mini-plug-to-RCA-out (headphone to 3 pronged yellow/white/red) for another $20, which in my opinion is worth it.. you can scroll through your photos on your big (or at least bigger than your computer screen) TV screen.

4) MUSIC: Biggest change here is you can now see the album art... sounds like a tiny feature, but after you get tired of showing off your photo albums, this is probably the single most useful feature.When before you had no incentive to look down at your ipod screen, now you'll find yourself looking at it all the time... In terms of music playback, it's the same as any click-wheel, 4G iPod.

5) SIZE/WEIGHT: Its great!, I cannot physically tell the difference in size and weight between the 20gig b&w and the 30gig iPod Photo... this was my #1 complaint about the iPod Photo 40gig -> it was simply too big and heavy to be practical... that's why I was forced to buy the Shuffle!

6) COSMETIC CHANGES: None on the outside, still scratches as easily as the rest, but has a color screen w/ a new font and screen looks very dark w/out the backlight.

7) BATTERY LIFE: Conditional based on the user... However, so far it seems to run above spec during mixed use = 16hours.

8) STORAGE: Disk access time for photos do have a lag (on both my 40gig and 30gig), and the unit tends to freeze from time to time, but I would consider the severity and frequency of this event to be insignificant to the overall functionality.In terms of size -> i think audio books, photos, and Podcast Radio programs have made -for the first time- the ridiculous size of the hard drives actually justifiable... in my 40gig photo, i used 15gigs due to my podcasts and audio books and would expect to reach 30gigs in 3-4 years of use... I still feel the 60gig to be not very practical... i suggest you stick with the smaller size.

== SURPRISES OUT OF THE BOX==

A) NEED TO BUY SOFTWARE: In order to enable the cooler features - like syncing albums automatically, etc..., you need to purchase or own iLife (iPhoto specifically) 4.03 or better (if you are the rare few that bought your computer in the last few months w/ 4.0, you still have to download an upgrade to 4.03) ... Now I bought my iMac from the Apple website last Christmas and it still shipped w/ iLife 2.0... so I had to purchase iLife 4.0 (according to several company reps, there is no free upgrade from the jump from 2.0 to 4.0)...which took me an additional day to figure out... Yes, you can assign folders and such to sync to your photos to your iPod, BUT having an album editor enables full control of changes and what changes I'm making, to the entire process. Oh Yeah, you need a high version of iTunes as well; my pod came w/ ver. 4.7... IMHO, you \need\ the iPhoto upgrade to enjoy this purchase.If you have PC, you have to buy Adobe Photoshop Elements.

B) TRANSITIONS: Only the "wipe" from right-to-left is included, however, I heard a firmware upgrade with more transitions would be out later this year.

C) SLIDESHOWS: You cannot assign multiple music lists in iTunes to specific albums in iPhoto... as of 03/05, you can only assign a SINGLE music list to ALL photo albums when you enable the slideshow feature. Yes, you can change this music list, but need to go back to the menu to do so.

D) COLOR SCREEN: When not backlit, the screen during regular music playback turns \VERY\ dark, much more so than regular B&W iPods... you need a light source reflecting off of the screen in order to see the letters... typeface has changed too, more like "Arial" and slightly smaller. Oh yeah, with the backlight off, the screen still displays in color.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

A) You cannot adjust the color quality, size, cropping or transitions of the photos when detached from your computer, so don't waste your 1 customer service call credit on it.

B) The 30gig package does not come with the TV-out cable, you have to buy it ($20), and it comes w/ a USB 2.0 based charger, not firewire.

C) If you never upgrade your iTunes due to the hacks you can employ on earlier versions, then you cannot use the photo feature (yes I tried).

D) ALBUM ART: For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, you don't have to purchase a song from iTunes to get album art... just drag and drop an image of the album cover into the window where iTunes usually shows the album art.... plus there are programs out there that auto-download the album art into iTunes if you have the name of the album and the name of the artist...

(More customer reviews)I received my U2 Special Edition iPod for Christmas this year from my darling Mom, and I opened the box with great anticipation. There it was, in my hand: beautifully simple in design; black, red and chrome; shiny, sleek and... mine.I didn't know when I started to charge it, set it up, and fill it with music (as of this writing, over 3000 songs, from downloads and my personal CD collection, and that means I'm still only 3/5ths full!) that this little device would, in a small but important way, change my life.

My iPod is my music, anywhere I want it, any time. No more being tied to a CD player and my umpteen bulky cases of CDs, no more being stuck with the radio and its endless jabbering DJs and horrible commercials. No more having to edit what I listen to for the benefit of those around me. Beyond music, I can download audio books.

Why the iPod? The design is so simple and beautiful that it has set the standard for MP3 players, Apple technology has proven itself stable and powerful, Windows users like me can use it, there are a wide variety of accessories available for it, there are several good online communities devoted to the iPod where you can learn new things, and iTunes is easy to use for loading music into your iPod.

Why this iPod in particular? Because I madly love the black and red. Before the U2 Special Edition came out, I was interested in the iPod, but I absolutely despised the cold clinical white plasticmodels, and thought the Mini had inadequate capacity. Your aesthetics may vary, which is, of course your right. You may disagree (and may even inflict your poorly spelled (e.g., "eye-soaring"),or otherwise idiotic review of this iPod on us) but isn't it nice that Apple gave me this cool option, while not taking away your beloved white plastic?

Another reason why this iPod in particular: I love U2. They just keep getting better.

I invested in a good protective case for my iPod, Shure E2 earphones, and a protection plan from Apple. I'm strongly considering the Logic3 I-Station Speakers, or the Bose Sounddock, and an audible.com membership. My car (Honda Element EX) came with an aux port, and a simple trip to Radio Shack to get a $6 male-to-male 3mm cord hooked up my iPod to my car stereo. It's heaven.

My iPod is, for me, just perfect.

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 30 GB MP3 Player Review

(More customer reviews)When I first started looking for a portable jukebox, I--like everybody else--was drooling for an iPod. Then I did my research, and here's why I decided on the Zen Jukebox Xtra: (1) the iPod battery is not user-replaceable, you have to pay $60 for a two-year Apple plan in order to get it replaced, and you have to send the unit back to them to get it replaced (evidently it starts losing its charge about six months into ownership); (2) huge storage space--I have my entire CD collection on it plus a whole bunch of downloaded tracks at high quality and I've still only used half the space; (3) sound quality is fabulous, especially if you spring for a decent pair of headphones. As far as durability goes, granted I haven't passed the dreaded 90-day-warranty mark, but it goes with me trail-running daily (because of other reviews I've read, I hold it in my hand over rough spots so it doesn't get jostled too much) and in the car on long drives a few times a week. I've also dropped it from a pretty good height with no damage. My one complaint? No support for MP4. BUT...you can upgrade the firmware to be Real Player compatible (their downloads are only 49 cents) and I've found the process easily done. Good tech support as well. I just don't think there's a better value for the money.

(More customer reviews)The Sony NW-S703F (Sony should really rethink naming their mp3 players)is a beautiful piece of hardware that boasts innovative noise canceling properties, great sound, and good looks. I was in the market for a flash player for exercising and I came upon a good deal on this particular player and I have been more than pleased with it. Here are some of the pros and cons of this flashy little device:

Pros
+ Innovative noise canceling function that really works! (note: noise activating function is only activated when using the proprietary headphones)
+ Great design and small size. The player resembles a futuristic looking lighter or a metallic pocketknife, its really eye catching and unique.
+ Excellent sound quality
+ Very intuitive to use
+ Cool graphical user interface and menu design, everything about this player looks modern and cool
+ Cool intelligent shuffle features, including Time Machine Shuffle (shuffles through songs from a particular year), My Favorite Shuffle, and Sports Shuffle (shuffles songs for a particular time span, say a ten minute jog. Sports shuffle also features a cool little animated jogging figure that even stops to drink water when you pause your music)
+ Jacket search - you can search through your music library by the album cover and it even plays a sample of the albums first song
+ Impressive battery life

Cons
- Sonic Stage software is not the most user friendly software to work with, but don't let the software prevent you from looking into this player, its not that bad.
- Proprietary; if you lose the headphones you lose the noise canceling capabilities. And like another reviewer stated these headphones will not work with any other mp3 player; this player will also not work with audible files, subscription music services, or netlibrary files, you pretty much either have to use your own music or buy music from Sony's Connect music store.
- Lack of accessories

All in all, I'm am more than pleased with my purchase and if you don't let the Sonic Stage software scare you away then you are in for a real treat, as this player boasts excellent sound quality, innovative noise canceling function, and a very eyecatching modern design. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. If you're looking for something different and eye catching than I suggest you give this player a go..

(More customer reviews)I have owned three of these mp3 players.The first one was indestructible, but I was finally forced to get a new one.The 2nd one (bought here at Amazon, through J&R) didn't work, so I returned it and got it replaced. The third one had even more problems than any of the others, so I'm now in the process of finding something else.

The positives?Great price, replaceable AAA battery, good sound.

The negatives?Quite a few, unfortunately.The player will shut off all the time, for no obvious reason.Then you have to power it back on, which sometimes takes several minutes.The "shuffle" feature works oddly: sometimes after powering off, if you had it on "shuffle", it will take you right back to the beginning of the shuffle sequence.In other words, the shuffle follows the exact same pattern all the time, unless you manually reconfigure it.And even then, if you've done that, and it turns off on its own, it will start again at its ORIGINAL shuffle sequence beginning.VERY annoying.

The buttons work.....sometimes.Other times, they just don't.The display is fine as long as you're not in any kind of light; then it's impossible to read.

This could have been a great deal, but with all the little quirks and malfunctions and other problems, it's just not reliable enough to keep around.I wish I had saved the receipt from this latest one: I would've returned it and asked for my money back.

In short, don't buy this unless you're into irritation.
