Sony MZ-S1 S2 Sports Net MD MiniDisc Player Review

(More customer reviews)I'm starting to wonder whether Sony is even on the right track in trying to remain relevant in the mp3-centric digital music world.
I think something like NetMD would have been utterly fantastic three years ago, when USB-enabled computers were starting to gain mainstream adoption, and before hard disk and cd-r burner prices hadn't dropped low enough for more people to rip and burn their music collection. Then, I think, the ability to transfer up to five hours of music onto a single, (relatively) inexpensive minidisc would have held greater appeal.
Regardless of timing, the NetMD technology is still pretty neat. You are able to transfer digital content, either imported mp3/wma or audio CD's, directly to minidisc using one of three compression settings.
SP, the full-bore setting, allows up to 80 minutes on one disc, and is the best sounding of the three. It is "lossy" compression, like mp3, but to my damaged ears, they sound at least as good as CD's. LP2 doubles the storage time, but the increased compression makes the resulting recordings sound like... well, ALMOST as good as a 160kbps cbr mp3. Almost.
LP4 quadruples storage time, but as you might guess, the sound quality is pretty dodgy, comparable to a poorly ripped 128kbps (or lower) cbr mp3. LP4 is pretty much a lost cause as far as most rock goes, but it is surprisingly passable for hip-hop and spoken word (and probably for most electronica, but I have yet to test this).
As far as transferring existing mp3/wma content goes, I wouldn't recommend it (I know, it pretty much nulls the hype of NetMD, doesn't it?). I've tried converting a batch of 160kbps cbr mp3's to SP and LP2, using the included OpenMG Jukebox.At SP, the sound quality is comparable to the original, but the transfer to MD takes almost as long as the length of the content. Transfer in LP2 is faster, if you disregard the processor-hog conversion to ATRAC LP2 mode, but the sound quality takes a nosedive.
From what I've read, OMG Jukebox is notoriously unstable. Or so I've read. I've been able to successfully install it on two separate Windows 2000 Pro machines, and I'm feeling so lucky, I'm going to buy a lottery ticket once I'm done with this review.
That said, once you fast forward to 2002, where more people than not have gigabytes of existing mp3's on her or his hard disk, you have to wonder whether it's more convenient to rely on a solid state mp3 player to take small sections of this content without any further format-shifting, or dump them en masse to CD-R/W's for use with 3" or 5" disc-based mp3 players. If NetMD handled mp3's and wma's natively (or even managed Sony's proprietary ATRAC without the inflexible audio management software), I think this product would have much more relevance today.However, due to intellectual property concerns, I think Sony hamstrung itself with its convoluted content management system.
In the meanwhile, I've been using the Net MD Simple Burner program to transfer audio CD content directly to MD (mostly in LP2 mode, with some LP4, but for some weird reason, SP is NOT available as a transfer mode with Simple Burner!). I have started amassing a usable variety of discs packed with songs for the gym or for walks in the park, and from there on, it's straightforward MD goodness. Compact form factor, high skip resistance, durable media, high battery life. Basically all the things that most CD-R/W mp3 players aren't.And in a nice change of pace from the bumblebee black-and-yellow motif, the new S2 Sports design definitely adds some to the "cool factor".
I'm inclined to think that Sony munged the Minidisc yet again, this time with questionable software, but the good news is that I am still able to make use of NetMD. Drop me a line if you have any questions or war stories to share.

I was a little skeptical about straying from more established players from Cowon, Apple, iRiver, Creative and others but took the plunge. I've owned two iPods, a Rio Karma, Rio Carbon(s), an iRiver something, Audible Otis, Rio 500 and several others.

The Pilot has them all beat on features and most on performance. You won't find a player that 'does it all' like the Pilot. As a long time Audible subscriber, the Pilot is perfect. Hard and soft bookmarking, timer and plenty of storage. With an sdhc slot, storage can be increased by at least 2X. Better yet, the Pilot integrates the card completely so you don't have to mess around with annoying navigation from one drive to the next.

Sound quality is a solid B to B+. CNET just chose it as one of their top five audiophile mp3 players. They tested the players with an audio analyzer to eliminate personal bias. Music sounds every bit as dynamic as my iPods (a 2nd and 4th gen).

Battery life is a pretty standard ~20 hours. The FM tuner is surprisingly sensitive. I'm actually able to walk around outside without an unreasonable amount of static or drop out. It's an RDS tuner. You can see song and artist info on the screen from compatible radio stations. You can record FM or from an external, line-out source. There's a video output(or secondary headphone jack depending on how you set it up). I haven't tried it but apparently you can load a video in the Pilot and then connect it to a television.

The Pilot is a ums device so you can plug it in, drag and drop, no drivers required. I bounce back and forth between a mac and pc so having a player that is seen by both as a mass storage device is very convenient. Standard mini usb plug too. No proprietary cables. Video playback isn't a priority for me but I tried a couple videos and in spite of a small screen, was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Very smooth and about 30 fps.

It has stereo bluetooth which I don't use but it would be handy if your car stereo has bluetooth connectivity. Mine doesn't unfortunately. Fast forwarding is audible which makes it much easier to find what you're looking for. The Pilot has proven to be virtually scratch proof. I never use a case and always carry it in a pocket. I've had it in a pocket with keys, change and grit. No scratches. Pretty impressive. It supports several different formats but I use mp3, wmv and aa exclusively. It can display jpg's and txt files as well.

It comes with a pretty good video conversion program but I use Handbrake, a free, open source program that is a lot more capable. The only downside to this player is a somewhat less polished feel than class leaders from Cowon, Creative and Apple. Not to overstate it but the controls could be smoother. The jog wheel is a little cheap feeling and the bookmarking button is a three way design that can prevent a smooth bookmark sometimes. I wish they would have used a single button.

Another nice feature with bookmarking is that when you delete a file with bookmarks, the bookmarks are deleted too. Seems like a no-brainer but my Rio would retain the bookmarks even when the file was deleted. On the other hand, the Rio would let me overwrite bookmarks automatically so old bookmarks weren't much of an annoyance. The Pilot doesn't do this so if you run out of bookmarks, you have to manually remove them or the file to make room for more. Fortunately, you can do all this with the Pilot without having to connect it to your computer. The Pilot has proven to be completely reliable with almost daily use. The only glitch is occasionally (twice I think) having to reset it. Both times it locked with Audible files. I'm willing to give the Pilot the benefit of the doubt as I've had issues with Audible files before with other players. Fortunately, resetting this is a snap. Simply pull back the power switch for about ten seconds and you're done. My Rio Carbon needed a small paperclip inserted into a tiny hole. Not convenient if you're outside without a small paperclip handy.

Bottom line, if you want all the bases covered, this is an excellent choice. Probably the best choice in my opinion. This player has to be the most feature rich dap out there. If you only want to listen to music, this may not be for you. If features, Audible, podcasts, audiobooks, video, file management, expandibility, sound quality, intuitive controls and reliability are priorities, the Pilot is a great buy. The 8gb Pilot frequently goes on sale for $99.00 at the Best Buy website so keep an eye out. Great value, outstanding performance.

(More customer reviews)This is a really nice little touch player with only a couple of issues.I like it because it does practically everything I need it to do.It has a camera and video camera (granted these are low quality, but still nice if you want to take a picture of something and don't have a good camera on you).It also includes a webcam (haven't figured this out yet), and an FM radio and a couple of flash games (haven't tried these out yet).It also features a voice recorder.The battery lasts about 3 hours on a full charge when you play mainly music.I don't know how long the battery lasts if you play mainly videos because I haven't tried that out yet either.When you get the player, it seems really cheap and light, and is pretty much made of plastic, so I'd recommend taking good care of it. It includes headphones, which have worked great for me, and the external speaker when you don't have headphones plugged in is pretty decent.The player features a drag and drop system.The menu is nice, you can either have a menu you scroll through horizontally, or change it in the settings so that the entire menu comes up on the screen at the same time.There's a bit of a learning curve to using this, it took me quite some time to figure it out.I've never had an ipod, so playlists aren't really something I'm used to, but if those are important to you, you can kind of fake it by creating folders and call it whatever you want the playlist to be called, and dragging and dropping the music files you want into that list.Then, to access it, use the "dir list" under the music menu to find the playlist folders you've created.Also, if you want your music shuffled, when a song is playing, you tap an icon in the top left of the screen and a menu will come up that allows you to select sequence, random, intro, etc.If you click random, you can shuffle your music.You can also play music by artist, songs, genre, and album.Also, this player does not include a wall charger, I had to purchase one separately from the Walmart website.It does include the usb cable so that you can charge it on a computer.I figured out most of this stuff by playing around with the player as the little handbook that comes with it is not a lot of help.Also, no case is included, so if you want something to keep it safe in, you need to purchase that on your own.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this MP3 player wanna be, unfortunately before I read the other reviews.I got this in the mail and it took me 20 minutes to get the stupid thing to register on my computer (Which is less then 30 days old and has no problems). Once it finally clicked in to my computer, it was a drag and drop system to move the music.However the HUGE let down was went I went to use it and it sounded like it was under water.It was a HUGE waste of money, spend the money and buy something decent.
