MARWARE Sidewinder - Hard case - black - iPod with video (5G) 30GB, iPod classic 80GB Review

MARWARE Sidewinder - Hard case - black - iPod with video 30GB, iPod classic 80GB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this case when I bought my 80 gig iPod, and it has saved my iPod on countless occasions.I have dropped my iPod on many different surfaces, from plush carpet to concrete, and while my case has taken a lot of abuse, my iPod doesn't have a scratch on it!

But when I dropped it on concrete for what was probably the 40th time (I really need to find a better way to carry it when I run!), the case itself started separating at the side seams and needed to be replaced.

There are a few downsides:

1) It doubles the size of the iPod.

2) The flap on the bottom that covers the cable port broke off and couldn't be replaced. This wasn't a really big issue for me, since I use that port several times a day.

3) "The slide-and-hide" arm has come off a few times, but I was able to slide it back in place every time and continue using it with no problems.

And finally,

4) Be careful winding your earphones around the arm, wind too tight and it damages the cord.

All in all this has been the best case I have ever owned, and was well worth every cent (for the first one and the second replacement case).

Cody 30GB Portable Media Player PMP4330 Review

Cody 30GB Portable Media Player PMP4330
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Strengths:
Wide Screen, Built-in Speakers, FM Radio, Records Content Directly (no docking station needed), Plays Most Content, Fits in Pocket

Weaknesses:
Power Adapter Required to Re-charge Unit (No USB Charging)

I saw a prior CNET review and wanted to set the record straight because I thought it was unfair and we (as consumers) need to tell companies when they are doing something right. As an experienced PMP user, I can tell you that there are only two choices that make sense for users who want PMP's with the most comprehensive video functions, that can still be slipped in your pocket: Archos 604, or Coby PMP4330.

Archos was the leader in power PMP's until they split their product into two separate products. Now you must purchase a separately-priced docking module to record video, and use proprietary cables to connect the unit to a computer. Archos did this to get the price closer to the low $300's because the days of selling $400+ PMP's are over.

Coby, however, has managed to deliver a product that allows you to have your cake and eat it to. You get a self-contained unit with all the features of the old Archos models in a very compact package for around $269 (in a recent sale) with a 30GB hard drive and an SD card slot. You don't have to purchase anything else to record content directly from the unit, and it uses normal cables that are included.

The 4.3" wide screen blows away the competition. If you haven't used a PMP with a wide screen, you don't know what you are missing. Many PMP manufacturers are moving this direction. Coby allows you to set the ratio and fill the entire screen regardless of the video. It would take about 3 iPod Video screens placed side-by-side to get the same effect. This is a good unit to watch video on. My advice, don't buy units with square screens.

The stereo speakers are surprising good and blow away the lousy speakers on my other PMP's and even my laptop! You rarely see this in a PMP. I think the reason for this is the curved design behind the unit that allows optimal space for speaker positioning. I'm not an expert, but you will be satisfied. I can't figure out how CNET's previous review got it so wrong.

The FM radio function is excellent because Coby designed a user-friendly radio interface that looks and feels the part. My wife couldn't get over the screen that looked like a car radio and was so easy to move through the automatic presets. She wanted one of her own just based on that feature. The reception quality was as good as any car radio. Optionally you can record any radio content to MP3.I think this would be most useful if you want to record a radio talk show and listen to it later.

As an MP3 player it doesn't impress or unimpress me. Most MP3 players deliver content that is pretty standard. This is no exception. One benefit of this model is the equalizer, but that is something I expect on any unit. If you don't care about video and just want an MP3 audio player, buy an iPod because you will be able to recharge it using a USB cable and it will have a smaller foot print. I similarly have little to say about the voice recorder or e-book functions because they are bonus features to me. I have tried them and they work. Good enough.

The File Explorer is about what you would expect. It is nothing fancy, but it is simple and uses a directory hierarchy like any computer hard drive. One nice thing is the ability to rename files and directories using the unit, but you will probably end up using your computer to organize the files. When you connect the unit by USB, your computer recognizes the PMP as another drive and allows you to manage files just like most other PMP's (except iPod). It's a simple, universal USB cable. Archos, what are you thinking?

Recording video content directly from the unit is a HUGE plus and separates it from the newest Archos models which do not record video unless you buy the $100 docking model which is a deal-killer. This is great if you have a lot of programs TIVOed and want to move them to your PMP. You get typically large .asf files which you can keep and play as-is or if space is a concern (and it will be), you can use a utility like ConvertMovie 4.0 to reduce them by 80 percent with the same quality in MP4 format. Ten episodes of the Simpsons can be reduced to about a gigabyte. One thing I noticed is that it takes about 5-seconds to start after you press record, but no big deal.It has a typical timer so you can set the time or you can stop recording manually. No fancy scheduling, but that's what my TIVO is for.

The form factor and size is unmatched by the competition. It is a little wider, a little thicker, and about an inch longer than a 60/80GB iPod Video, yet it does so much MORE. It still slips easily into your pocket, and the back of the unit tapers inward so it appears smaller and fits easier into your pocket. I own an iPod Video and I can tell you that the only things iPod has on this unit is the smaller size and the larger hard drive. That is it. I even disagree with the previous review about the controls.I have no problem with them and find them easy to use, actually easier to fast forward video than the iPod.

The previous review talked about the quality of the unit being low. I have to disagree. Yes, it is plastic, not metal like the back of an iPod Video, but it is decent quality and as good as the materials forming most new laptops. Just because iPod sets the bar high with a metal cover on the back does not mean that all other cases are cheap. It is a practical design that works. Everything is plastic anymore and it keeps the price affordable.White plastic always looks cheaper. If Coby had used an all-black design, then the previous reviewer probably wouldn't have noted anything.

I actually bought this unit as a present to replace my daughter's current PMP, but decided to give her my hand-me-down iPod Video instead.I think that's for the best.I hope that Coby keeps doing what it is doing in providing another option for consumers. If you are in the market for a video PMP right now, you won't beat this deal and you won't be disappointed.Maybe Apple, Microsoft, Archos and the rest can learn something from what Coby is providing.

Coby MP-C886 MP3 Player with 1 GB Flash Memory, FM Radio & USB Drive Review

Coby MP-C886 MP3 Player with 1 GB Flash Memory, FM Radio & USB Drive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a cheap MP3 player for my daughter's birthday.I figured she'd lose it anyway. She was excited when she opened it, but two hours later, I'd seen enough.Turns on, then off repeatedly when connected to the computer through the USB connection, so computer can never fully sync with the device. Our other MP3 players work fine.
COBY "customer support" is horrendous.First, "Damien" tells me that I must charge the unit for 4 hours.I argue with him that this thing takes a AAA battery, what's to charge! He gets back to me, agrees that it is defective. Then tells me they want a $6 MONEY ORDER to process a return.Returning to Amazon.

Product Description:
Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand but loaded with features, the Coby MP-C886 MP3 player lets you listen to your favorite tunes on the bus, at the park, and just about anywhere else. The device measures a mere 3.58 by 1.1 by 0.75 inches (W x H x D), with a removable end cap that reveals a direct USB plug for connecting to a computer (no cable required). The mobile storage function is ideal for transporting business documents across the country or serving as an overflow backup for your digital camera's memory card.
It's easy to navigate through the audio player's contents thanks to the high-contrast LCD display, which displays the song title and artist information. COBY MP-C781 MP3 Player w/1 GB Flash Memory & FM Radio Review

COBY MP-C781 MP3 Player w/1 GB Flash Memory & FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
10/16/2006 - I bought this little player for my 17 year old daughter after she whined about everyone else having mp3 players. I compared prices and bought this one for the price, more than anything else. That was 8 months ago and this little player is still going strong!! I bought a 2 year extended warranty with it, just in case, but it looks like I won't be using it.

This player has great sound, though my daughter uses her own tiny headphones that she already had. The batteries seem to be long lasting and when you hook it up via USB to your computer, it functions like an extra drive. It holds mp3's as well as data files. Via the computer, you can change song order and change song titles. My daughter rarely uses the radio, but says it comes in clear when she does.

This little thing has been dropped more than once, and it goes almost everywhere with a very active teen and still holding up well. I'm considering buying one for myself.

COBY MP-C741 MP3 Player w/256 MB Flash Memory & FM Radio Review

COBY MP-C741 MP3 Player w/256 MB Flash Memory & FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got the COBY MP-C741 and have used it for a couple of days and I must say that I am impressed by it considering its price.

The package includes the player, headphones, a battery, the manual, a USB to mini USB adapter cable and a mini CD which includes its drivers. It is plug and play in Windows ME/2000/XP and Mac OS X so no drivers are needed, the included mini CD only has the drivers needed for Windows 98.

It has 256MB of integrated flash memory which can store up to 60 songs (at 4 minutes per song) at 128kbps and also plays WMA files (doubles the song capacity at 64kbps). It has an integrated mini USB 2.0 connection for fast downloads, it also supports creating folders as well as drag and drop. It also has a SD/MMC card slot in the battery cover for expanding its memory capacity to up to 768MB by using 512MB SD/MMC cards which can be swapped or changed to add more music.

It also features a navigation option to navigate and find files, the LCD is screen is backlit and can be programmed to display ID tags, file info or lyrics if available on the file. It also has some preset equalizer settings to improve the sound coming out of the player.

It can also function as a portable storage unit and it is not necessary to have a battery installed on it for using this function since it will feed on the USB port allowing you to take large files by putting them either on the integrated flash RAM or an installed SD/MMC card. Since it supports SD/MMC cards it can also be used as a portable card reader as well.

It lasted a whole two days with the included alcaline battery. It runs on a single AAA battery and you can also use AAA rechargeable batteries. The included heaphones while not the greatest they do a good job, you can also connect your own headphones to it if you wish since it has a standard headphone port.

It also has an integrated FM radio with good reception and also lets you store preset stations. The recording function allows to either record from radio or the integrated microphone, the recorded sound is quite clear (when using the medium or better settings) and can be reproduced by either the MP3 player or a computer (uses IMA-ADCPM encoding) and can store up to 16 hours of recorded sound using the best settings in the integrated flash memory.

The case is made of plastic so it has normal resistance and could be prone to scratches (no paint comes off) if not treated properly so I recommend that you get a carrying bag or case for it to keep at its best.

So far, I have no complains about this player or find any cons to its functionality.

Of course, there are a whole lot more options out there when it comes to MP3 players and it all depends on your needs for an MP3 player, the advantage of flash based drives is that they don't skip if moved around constantly (for example while jogging) or have a hard drive that could go bye-bye if dropped.

If you do not need to look at videos or pictures on your player or need to carry several gigabytes of music around, don't like MP3/WMA formats or are pretty annoyed by minuscule scratches (when maltreated) or that it won't make you a latte capuccino, this player is a viable choice.

With MP3/WMA playing capabilities, voice/FM radio recording, FM radio, plug-and-play, drag and drop, mass storage and SD/MMC card reading/memory expansion capabilities you will be hard pressed to find a device that will do all of this while costing around [...].

Hope this is helpful.
