(More customer reviews)I've tried many MP3 players, and I've returned many MP3 players. The first one that I kept was the Virgin Pulse 64MB player. I've had it for nearly two years and finally after dropping it a few times, it's starting to go out on me. It was time to upgrade and get more space anyway. So I thought I'd do what everyone else did, get an iPod! So I bought a pink iPod mini, just to try it out, but I will definitely be getting a refund! Sure it's pretty and the sound is good, but is it worth $200? No!
So that brings me to the Philips HDD077. I will compare the two(iPod mini and Philips).
The Philips has a nice, sleek design. It is slightly shorter than the iPod mini and a tad bit thicker, but both are lightweight. The Philips only comes in one color (white with silver trim), but they offer red, black, and blue stickers to change up the trim. Obviously, the iPod comes in multiple colors.
The Philips has buttons that are user friendly, just push them. There's a volume button, a hold button, on/off button, all of that. The iPod mini has a few main buttons, not including a volume button. To turn the volume up or down or to scroll through a menu on the iPod mini, the user must move their finger around the button area (like a laptop mouse). This is really annoying because every time you go to touch a button, you may accidently change the volume!
The Philips has an FM tuner. The iPod...none.
The Philips has 2 GB of space and can hold about 1,000 songs and it also supports compressed files. The iPod minis come in 4 GB (1,000 songs) and 6 GB (price increase!).
Philips comes with a charger that plugs into the wall(17 hours of play, 4 hours to charge). iPod mini charges through the usb cable.
Philips came with a case that has a belt clip and a neck strap. iPod mini came with a belt clip.
Now, let's get to what counts most.....
Philips uses Musicmatch software to transfer files. This software is easy to use and I didn't even have to read a guide to figure out how to get music on to my player. The iPod uses iTunes software, which was supposed to be easy to use, but I had trouble figuring out how to get music onto the player and I still don't know how to delete music(I'll have to find the instructions for that one). I think that the software should be easy enough to use so that the user doesn't have to read instructions for simple things like transferring files.
The sound quality of the Philips is great! It has a fewer equalizer settings than the iPod. The iPod also has great sound.
Both have a backlight.

Overall, I think the Philips is a better choice than the iPod mini because it costs less and it offers more(like radio tuning!).
I only have two concerns about the Philips and they are minor. The earbuds are designed funny. The left wire is about 3 times shorter than the right wire and they are not adjustable. I called to ask about this and it's not a defect. The right earbud is supposed to go around your neck and then into your ear. But you can buy your own earbuds. My other concern is the case with belt clip. I think it could have been designed so that the user use the controls on the player, but the case covers up everything but the charger port, usb port, and earphone port.
So at least give this one a try before you blow $200 on an iPod! You might like it. This one is a keeper for me!

In my latest search for the newest and the best, a GREAT FM tuner was high on my priority list. I exercise every morning for about 30 minutes. After a while no matter what mp3s I have loaded, they start sounding a bit tired. I began to listen to FM a lot and started getting annoyed at how many few stations come thru clear on my Samsung 4 gig flash player, if at all. After reading tons of reviews I was led to this IRiver player. WOW it's really REALLY a great player. The FM tuner is by far the best I have heard on any player Truly. I had two Cowons and they were THE worst! I think some companies JUST add FM just so it appears to have more features than an Ipod. In Cowon's case it's mostly just hiss that you hear. I am not knocking Cowon they do make some GREAT sounding players overall, JUST not for FM! Back to the Clix..the tuner is strong and gets a ton of stations I never got before. The GUI is just awesome..and surprisingly this thing is very easy and comfortable to operate with just 1 hand! If you are stationary and can use two hands, to me this has the best interface of any current player. It sounds CLEAR as a bell..the eq works well seems to add no distortion unlike the famous ipods! The screen is SO sharp and you can view it at any angle..both in the sun and at night. I just love this thing...and I will soon be selling my Samsung 4 gig player in favor of the Clix 2.

Having used the player more I have to comment about the battery life. I LOVE the player but was also surprised I think I only got about 6 hours of total battery life initially. However, I realized this 8gig model came with the screen ON by default, for 1 minute. That's WAAAY too long. With any new device you will want to mess with it a lot..so I guess that 1 minute screen ON was much too long. I have now set the BACK LIGHT now to 10 seconds and the battery seems to last MUCH MUCH longer. I saw a comment on a 4 gig Clix about changing SLEEP, to POWER DOWN I will try that as well. Don't know why IRIVER would ship this with the screen ON for 1 minute but lowering it to 10 seconds or even 5 ought to help the battery life out a ton. Other than that this player and IRiver are Quite solid and great! Actually the more I use it the more I love this player. But if you buy one be sure to change the back light time if you want the battery to last!

Really the Clix is a dark horse. I am in NY and had to travel all the way into the city to find one. That may be another plus..if you are the type that wants something a bit different than your neighbor, this IRiver will answer that call too. But more than anything, in my opinion it's the finest player currently available and seems very well made.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product at Best-Buy as an exchange item for a Rio Karma jukebox because they didn't have any left in stock.
Let me focus on what's good about this player first, as that will be very easy to cover...
I have to tell you, this has to be the best looking jukebox, and I don't particularly like the iPod.
It has optical / analog input for recording and it also has a built-in mic!
The white/black contrast lcd is to die for, with very nice magnesium casing (nice dark colors too).
But aside from looks, this thing has nothing that beats any other mp3 player..
There is no way to directly start playing songs.You have to first select a playlist or a category, or even the "all tracks" to start playing.If you ever turn it off and then turn it on.. its time to do the same thing again.
I can hear it spin when I try to play a song, and I can feel it rotate the drive reader when it goes to the next song.
Within an hour of handling it, my fingerprints were so over the place and so noticeable, it was driving me crazy.
To add to it, there is no stop button, it never gets as loud as I want it, and it has very crappy visualizations for the songs.
The power button is the play button.What kind of user interface design is that?
The software that you have to use with it crashes everytime I try to use my existing mp3 archive.Even after updating, it does the same thing.To make it work, I had to manually copy my favorite songs into some prespecified folder...Took forever..
I would definitely want my Rio Karma back over this thing.Don't waste money over it.It doesn't come with any fancy features that might interest you.Its just a hard drive with mp3 playback and a good looking cover.That's it.

(More customer reviews)A little about me and this purchase.I'm a middle aged guy that is fairly techy, but not like some of you folks who keep up with the latest and greatest.That said, I had bought an MP3 that cost (at the time) quite a bit more than this one.And after about 3 weeks, it was so bugged up, I returned it and got this one.

That was about 18 months ago.I started using it with about 5 gigs of music on it, and it's just about full now.In that time, it has never crashed, or required a reload or reset.Not once.The battery lasts forever, and after 18 months, I don't see any changes in battery life.The sound quality is okay for something in this price range.I found that using a high quality pair of headphones made a night and day difference in sound quality.Of course, you have to ask yourself how much will you pay for headphones to go with a $60.00 MP3 player?

It has a couple of quirks or nuances, if you will.As others have mentioned, sometimes when you turn it on, it will take a minute and rebuild its' database.But that has only happened after I synced or loaded new music.And if you load a LOT of music at one time, the rebuilding database function can take several minutes, and occasionally it will do it again the next time you turn it on. But then it's over until you load up again.This is not an issue for me.I don't sync it up very often.With 8 gigs, I have no need to be swapping music all around depending on my mood.The menu is easy to use, but it could have been laid out better.If you want to change the shuffle options, and also the repeat options, you have to go to 2 different menus, the "now playing" menu, and the main menu.You enter one menu structure, do your thing, back all the way out, then go into the other menu, then back out.Not the end of the world, but they both should have been on the now playing menu.

The software that comes with it works okay.But I really don't use it.Most of the time I sync via windows media player. And sometimes I just drag and drop with Windows explorer.It all works fine.The radio has rich full sound too.I have not had videos display any chop or stuttering.But then, I also haven't loaded whole movies or TV shows on it either.The screen looks pretty good considering the tiny size.

This is an exceptional value at this price.I highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I love this mp3 player because of the clarity,clean looks and weight.The volume is good because I love to hear music as loud as possible. This also has great earphones but mine barely lasted a week and someone told me that this is par for the course on all mp3 players.That would be my only complaint. I think the price is great for an 8GB player and who really needs more space than this? I don't put books on this one so I doubt I'll go back to my 1GB ipod unless this one fizzles out. A really great product!
